East Wind written by Jack Winnick details the adventures and accomplishments of Lara Edmond and Uri Levin Uri is a member of the Mossad organization Israel s euivalent to the FBI and Lara is an FBI agent who specializes in computer programming and code breaking The two unlikely friends are forced to combine Uri s knowledge of Arab terrorist groups and Lara s code breaking skills to stop a terrorist attack The conseuences of which could have nuclear conseuences The book also analyzes the stereotypes associated with both Americans and Israelis and is narrated by various individuals At many points in the novel the reader receives insight into the thoughts and beliefs of a terrorist which offers an interesting perspective on the events that occur Though the novel was well written I did not enjoy the book as much as I had hoped I would My biggest problem with the story was the portrayal of the only major female character Lara Edmond While nearly all the other characters have intense or emotional backstories and developed personalities Lara is plain and boring She is motivated by nothing but her wish to serve her country During the entire novel she seems to have no other thoughts besides her disdain for men And though she detests flirtation and men s attempts at seduction she falls for Uri a man who is no different from any other she had been privy to before Uri is nearly as masochistic as the rest of men in the FBI and yet the writer wants the reader to believe that he and Lara belong together Had Lara been a secondary character I could look past this failing However seeing that she is one of the primary protagonists I am unable to ignore such a shortcomingI rate this book 3 out of 5 stars not only due to Lara s lack of dimension but also because of the vast amount of boring detail the author included Winnick goes into far detail than is necessary about a variety of subjects such as the FBI the mechanics of bombs and the conflict between the United States and certain areas of the Middle East While some of this description was necessary to develop the plot most were unessential I credit this flaw to Winnick s experience and interest in Chemical and Nuclear Engineering However for the average reader such information distracts from the story I was impressed by the lack of grammatical errors of which I found there to be few I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys history Particularly modern events and conflicts Winnick describes in great detail the Six Day War I enjoyed this portion of the story because I was unaware of the great complexity of the conflicts in the Middle East I would also recommend East Wind to people who are interested in nuclear engineering and military tactics While I found these parts of the story rather boring others might enjoy them Fifth Avenue Uptown Tale Blazers cities unless all aid to Israel is terminated virtually isolating the Jewish State and allowing its Arab neighbors to overrun it The FBI CIA and other federal organizations are Power Engineering called to action A The Outlander Series OutlanderDragonfly in AmberVoyagerDrums of AutumnThe Fiery CrossA Breath of Snow and AshesAn Echo in the Bone crack U S Israeli team is given the daunting assignment of un. East Wind is a spy thriller set in the modern day 2010 United States At first East Wind has some promise as the readers are introduced to who I assumed would be the main characters They have us experience a nuclear blast from the view of one of the innocent victims they lead us on an exciting night raid and they introduce us to the first characters of the FBI It does not take long however for East Wind to go drastically down hill With almost every new chapter comes the introduction of a new character that is only loosely tied back into the main story if they are tied back in at all The chapters become so episodic and disjointed that it is hard to follow and even harder to care The lack of depth to each character dramatically shines through With a plethora of characters being introduced the reader might hope that each interaction is riveting and they could accept it as a book of loosely interconnected short stories However the book also falls flat when it comes to dialogue and reason The interactions with the characters seemed forced choppy and cheesy The readers are being led by an omnipotent narrator that freely jumps from one character s thoughts and feelings to another in the same conversation There is never a clear delineation from whose point of view of chapter is being seen The actions in the story are often left up to the dialogue akin to a poorly written script for a local theater production One memorable scene comes to mind the first date between Uri and Lara at the Thai restaurant Their conversations are periodically interrupted with dialogue like Oh you re right it s delicious So where was I The lack of visual descriptions and the using of dialogue describing their motions as almost a crutch thoroughly detracts from the reading experience In the category of backstory and information East Wind fails yet again There are many points where characters will be having a conversation about what s going on or why things are happening and the author uses the dialogue between the characters to give a real world history lesson on politics and military operations which are only loosely tied back into the plot of the novel instead of explaining a story There were many points where the novel felt like a textbook There were large stretches of conversation between characters that I skipped entirely because it was simply explaining the Yom Kippur War and not giving credible information to the plot For example another instance from the first date between Lara and Uri Lara asks Uri how he got involved with Mossad Instead of describing an event in his childhood where he had to learn how to fight or how he felt a great calling to serve his country and his people he goes on for several paragraphs about the history of Israel before he even gets to his father and his involvement He then tells Lara about the accomplishments of his father but the conversation ends before he mentions anything about how he got started as a Mossad agent which was the original uestion Great novels often times go into longwinded explanations of technical detail The Tom Clancy novels are among them Jack Winnick s East Wind however is not He goes into depth about the technical side of the nuclear physics and the components needed to make a fission bomb yet he then just leaves it at that There is no great effort to spin these into the novel or the plot There are a few weak attempts but they come across as if he thought he was writing notes for one of his lectures realized he was writing a novel and tried to tie them back together The rants seem tangential to the entire book and feel very out of place They add to overall disjointed and fractured nature of the book The final point I would like to cover about East Wind is the predominant instances of sexism and racism that can be cringed at throughout Whenever Lara enters the scene or is talked about some reference is made about her form or how she caused a lump to grow in Uri s trousers When I first picked up on these aspects which was very early on I thought that maybe the author was trying to make a point about sexism in the workplace and how ghastly it can be However no such point is every made The novel ends with none of the male characters in the book being reprimanded or even confronted about their appalling behavior towards their colleague I understand that Lara is meant to be a very beautiful woman but every single man in the book acts as if they have never seen a woman before The same can be said about racism There are many instances in the book where characters make racist remarks or jokes I again assumed there was going to be a political point but one never came One instance that truly stands out to me as remarkable that it made in to the final draft of the novel at all was in Chapter 13 when the reader is introduced to a new character called Washington or Wash Wash is a black man and calls one of his old friends to talk about Uri He notes how his contact is white bread but likes the ghetto talk and proceeds to have the least ghetto conversation Wash then has a thought that he is growing tired of the jive speak I find it hard to understand how in 2010 when the book was published such comments could be made without being attached to a political point about racism and stereotypes
