This was a nice narrative of the fighting near Nashville but I found the shortage of maps to be very frustrating I appreciate the fact that the publisher was trying to save money by using Library of Congress and West Point images but a few maps would have been a lot useful than a portrait of every officer in the campaign In fact the book includes photos of officers who were totally peripheral to the story at times when even a sketchy map would have been a huge help If you are not intimately familiar with the geography of Tennessee and parts south and east I recommend finding a map book to keep by you while you readThat said the author did what I thought was a careful job of balancing history with opinion but it s clear that he saw Hood as having botched the campaign and that is uite justified by the resultsOne short speculative chapter didn t work uite as well Granted if Thomas had been able to catch and destroy the remnants of Hood s force on the way south it would have ended some of the fighting sooner in the west but those surviving remnants made little difference in the rest of the war Speculating that Lee would have given up before leaving Petersburg is just that an came across as unsupported
